Video: Catalan Cuisine in India, at a premium
I was initially pretty intrigued when I stumbled across a video of a review of a new Catalan restaurant in New Delhi. I love the idea of seeing Catalan cuisine popping up in unexpected places, and India is about as unexpected as you can get. But halfway through the video I wanted to shut my eyes…this has got to be the most uncomfortable restaurant review I’ve ever seen. The chef can barely make it through his explanations of the origins of the dishes because the reporter is obsessed with how expensive the place is.
See for yourself (note: the worst is at the end):
Is this for real? Looks more like an SNL skit than a real show. The chef’s expressions of hatred are priceless.
To be fair, the food is expensive (10,000 Rupees for a dinner for two is about $225), but I guess that’s if you order ALL of the dishes featured, which seems like a lot. And yes, this is way out of reach of a regular person in Delhi. I get it. But if you bother to do a piece on a restaurant, why focus it on your sticker shock?
If anything, it made me chuckle. And something else to note: Catalan cuisine was never meant to be expensive. Most ingredients for dishes like the ones shown here can be found in any American supermarket.
