Amanida catalana is made with tomatoes, onion, lettuce with a variety of embotits. Amanida comes from the word amanir that means "to dress" in Catalan. Catalan cusine has a great variety of appetizers such as esqueixada and xato.

Desserts
|
One of the more popular Catalan desserts is Crema Catalana, which is very similar to Creme Brulee. The sugar on top of the crema catalana is caramelized in the traditional way, using a special iron. Another typical, but seasonal dessert in Catalonia are Panellets. This pastry is a mixture of boiled, mashed sweet potato and finely ground almonds. It is formed into little balls which are rolled in ground pine nuts before baking.

Fish and Seafood

In Catalonia there are myriad ways of preparing fish. One of them is the Parrillada, a platter with a varied selection of grilled fish. One of the more popular dishes is Zarzuela that requires not only fish and squid, but as great a variety as possible of seafood, as well as mussels and shrimp.

Meat and Poultry
|
Veal and beef used to be regarded as delicacies for the rich. Today these ingredients are accessible to everyone. Lamb is consumed in Catalonia but it is more predominant in inland Spain. Pork is used mostly to produce ham and sausages.

Pasta and Rice
|
Fideus are very short and thin noodles and one of the most popular pastas in Catalonia, used for such well-regarded dishes as Fideua or Fideus a la cassola. The other quintessentially Catalan pasta variety are Canelones, which while similar to the Italian pasta of the same name, are not exactly the same. Rice is king in Catalunya, used in elaborate dishes with seafood and meat. |

Tapas

There are literally hundreds of these small bites in Catalonia and of
the rest of Spain. Tapas are a reflection of Spanish lifestyle, and are eaten between meals with wine or beer. Some popular varieties are steamed mussels or clams, anchovies and olives.

Vegetables
|
The climate and rich soil of Mediterranean coast makes the vegetables grown here of the higest quality. Important vegetables grown here include pepper and lettuce, cucumbers, green beans, garlic, artichokes, carrots, white cabbage, cauliflower, zucchini and eggplant.
